The British Parliament is officially dissolved ahead of the general election

May 30. () –

The British Parliament was officially dissolved this Thursday ahead of the general elections to be held on July 4 following the early elections announced last week by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak.

“The dissolution of Parliament took place on Thursday 30 May 2024. All business in the House of Commons and the House of Lords has come to an end. There are currently no MPs and all seats in the House of Lords Commons are vacant until after the general elections of July 4, 2024,” reads the legislative body’s website.

Although the 650 seats in the Lower House are vacant as of now, the same is not true in the Upper House, since they are appointed and not elected. Members of the House of Lords retain their positions.

Sunak confirmed last week the holding of legislative elections almost six months before his mandate expired, after the possibility of bringing the elections forward has been on the table in recent months due to internal tensions within the Conservative Party.

The Labor Party emerges as the favorite and aspires to return to power 14 years later, since polls give them more than 40 percent of voting intentions, nearly 20 percentage points above the Conservatives. Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats would compete for third place ahead of the Green Party.
