( Spanish) –– The Attorney General’s Office of the state of Guanajuato, in Mexico, reported this Saturday that it arrested the suspect of killing journalist Ernesto Méndez and three more people during an armed attack on a bar owned by the communicator in the municipality of San Luis de La Paz, according to a statement.
The authorities identified the detainee as Roberto “N”, 22 years old, whom the Prosecutor’s Office considers to be the alleged perpetrator of the quadruple homicide. He is also a suspect in the attempted murder of a fifth victim, who “has gunshot wounds to the neck, and his health is delicate,” according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
is trying to find out if the detainee has legal representation. The Prosecutor’s Office indicated that in the “next few hours” he will be presented before a judge.
The Prosecutor’s Office did not report on the possible motive behind the crime.
The deadly attack took place in the early hours of Wednesday, when Méndez was in a bar he owned with the other four people. All were attacked with a firearm, the State Prosecutor’s Office reported at the time.
With the death of Méndez, there are already 13 journalists killed in the country so far this year, according to a count by non-governmental organizations such as Article 19, Reporters Without Borders (RSF), the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and a follow-up.
Mexico is considered one of the deadliest countries to practice journalism, according to several organizations that defend press freedom. 2022 would be the deadliest year for journalists, according to the records kept by Article 19 since 2000, since it already exceeds the figure for 2017, when 12 homicides of communicators were recorded throughout the year, according to that organization.
