Repair of the parts will take “at least a week”

May 28. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States announced this Tuesday that the delivery of humanitarian aid through the temporary pier installed on the coast of the Gaza Strip has been suspended after the structure was detached and damaged due to waves.

The deputy press secretary of the United States Department of Defense, Sabrina Singh, detailed in a press conference that the repair of the parts of the temporary dock by the US Central Command will take “at least a week.”

“Thus, once the repair and assembly of the dock is completed, the intention is to anchor it again to the coast of Gaza and resume the delivery of humanitarian aid to the people who need it most,” he indicated, adding that during the process they will count with the help of the Israeli Navy.

Singh has insisted that it is not possible to predict that there will be storms that could affect the structure again. “We’ve had kind of an unfortunate confluence of weather storms that have made it inoperable for a while and that’s caused some damage,” he explained.

Likewise, he specified that one of the ships that was stranded on the Israeli coast near Ashkelon has been recovered. “The second boat that was also stranded will be recovered in the next 24 hours,” she added.

The Pentagon indicated in April that the objective was to deliver about 500 tons of humanitarian aid per day through the daily unloading of 90 trucks to help the population of Gaza, although the estimated initial aid has decreased considerably compared to the estimates made initially. by the Department of Defense.

Shipments to the dock built by the Biden Administration arrive through the maritime corridor opened in March from Cyprus to try to increase aid to Gaza in the face of the restrictions imposed by Israel on land crossings.
