The development of the CNT has as its starting point aggregate economic data, including those from the System of National Accounts (SNA). However, aggregate data has limitations in measuring economic flows to and from people of different age groups in a given country. CNTs allow economic statistics to be disaggregated according to the age of the individuals who produce and consume goods and services in an economy, quantify the reallocation or transfer of resources through the family, the government and the market, as well as evaluate intra-equity. – and intergenerational of said systems. Furthermore, methodological developments based on the CNT, such as the National Time Transfer Accounts (CNTT) and the National Inclusion Accounts (CNI) expand the analysis, respectively, to time transfers and to the socioeconomic level of people, thus allowing address the gender and socioeconomic inequalities that characterize our societies.

The countries of Latin America and the Caribbean have made efforts to develop their respective CNTs, and have integrated or are considering integrating these accounts into their national statistical systems, in order to facilitate a more complete evaluation and formulation of socioeconomic policies in pursuit of productive, inclusive and sustainable development. Since 2007, CELADE-Population Division of ECLAC has been implementing technical assistance activities to the countries of the region and promoting research and studies based on the CNT methodology. In 2022, ECLAC and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) published the Spanish version of the “Manual of National Transfer Accounts: measurement and analysis of the generational economy”.
