The Prime Minister of Ireland calls on other countries to join the “historic” recognition of Palestine

The Irish Prime Minister, Simon Harris, has described this Tuesday’s recognition of the State of Palestine as “a historic movement” and has called on other countries to also take this step, which Ireland has coordinated with Spain and Norway.

Upon arrival at the Council of Ministers in which Ireland will formalize this recognition, Harris pointed out that “many” governments are already considering a similar initiative. “Today I urge you to do so,” he explained, in order to “create a trend towards peace and the cessation of violence” in the Middle East.

Harris has admitted that Ireland does not have the same capacity to influence Israel as the United States, its main ally, but has called for a common front within the EU, reports the RTE network. Europe, he added, “could be doing a lot more” to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

In this sense, he has urged the international community to exert “maximum pressure” to achieve this ceasefire and has raised the possibility of reviewing the association agreement between the EU and Israel, one day after the Israeli Government was summoned for alleged violations of Human Rights in the Gaza Strip.

Ireland’s recognition of Palestine will entail the full establishment of diplomatic relations. Dublin will give Embassy status to the current office in Ramallah (West Bank).
