Four days after the wind toppled a stage during a campaign event in northern Mexico, causing the death of 9 people and injuries to almost 200, a similar event took place in a town in the State of Mexico, in the center of the country, which left 58 injured, two of whom were transferred to a hospital, according to the state government.
Sunday’s mishap occurred during a rally of the ruling Morena party in the town of Xonacatlán, about 60 kilometers west of the country’s capital.
The Red Cross indicated through its social media channels that thanks to the intervention of four of its local groups, it was possible to “rescue alive 48 people who were trapped when a metal structure collapsed.”
Alfredo González, candidate for mayor of the town, said in statements to the local press that “there is no person who has lost their life” and that only two had to be transferred to a hospital. Hours later, the state government announced in a statement that one of those people suffered a nervous breakdown.
As happened last Wednesday in the state of Nuevo León, the Meteorological Service had previously warned of the formation of whirlwinds or tornadoes with a force of up to 70 kilometers per hour.
Videos circulating on social networks showed attendees in fear, although on this occasion the stage was much smaller and no major damage was seen.
50 kilometers from that place, in another campaign closure in Ixtlahuaca, the emergency authorities had to attend to another minor mishap due to the wind.
Civil Protection of the State of Mexico recommended since Saturday that the population avoid parking near at-risk structures or trees and secure tarps to avoid problems that the wind could cause.
One week before the general elections on June 2, all political parties press the accelerator to win votes and the recommendations and weather alerts They don’t seem to make the candidates change their plans.
