The EU foreign ministers meeting this Monday in Brussels have approved authorizing the “exploration” of a possible reactivation of the Rafah Border Crossing Assistance Mission (EUBAM), suspended since 2006.
The ministers have supported the initiative “to help the delivery of humanitarian aid”, as reported by the Council of the EU. This mission would have to have the collaboration of the Palestinian Authority and the Egyptian and Israeli authorities.
The reactivation of this mission “could be useful to support the entry of people into Gaza, and the exit,” Borrell stated in statements to the press after the ministers’ meeting, although he stressed that “we are not going to do it alone.” . “We are not going to be a security subcontractor for the border. We are not a security company,” he warned.
Before the start of the meeting this Monday, Borrell had already announced that EU support had been requested to reactivate this mission. “We have been asked to do it. If we can, we will do it, but keeping in mind that everything has to go in the direction of the Palestinian Authority assuming responsibility for Gaza,” he said.
Rafah is the main border crossing between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, but for two weeks it has been under complete control of Israel, which is why the entry of humanitarian aid to the Palestinian enclave through this route has ceased.
