15 days before the decisive European elections of 9-J, the radical right forces are reconfiguring their alliances in an attempt to maximize their influence in the European Parliament in the next legislature. The penultimate movement has done Marine Le Penwhich after breaking with the Alternative for Germany (AfD) offers to join forces with the Italian prime minister, Giorgia Meloni.
A pact that, according to the leader of the National Regrouping, would make the far-right the second most powerful political group in the European Parliament (ahead of the socialists), capable of imposing a radical shift in the EU towards more nationalist and anti-immigration policies.
“What would you like to say to Meloni?” he asks Le Pen a journalist from Corriere della Sera who accompanies her during a day of campaigning in Lillers, a town of 10,000 inhabitants in the north of France. “I think you and I we agree on the essential issuesamong which is recovering control of our respective countries,” responds the French politician.

“Now is the time to join, it would be a great help. If we succeed, we can become the second group in the European Parliament. I think We shouldn’t waste an opportunity like this.” alleges Le Pen.
The leader of the National Regrouping is also asked about the president of the Commission, the Christian Democrat Ursula von der Leyen, who also courts Meloni. Von der Leyen said last week in an electoral debate that she would be willing to make an agreement with the Italian prime minister because she considers her to be “pro-European” and “pro-Ukraine.” But in no case would she weave any alliance with Le Pen herself or with the AfD.
“The president of the Commission knows that her time is up and she is trying to buy votes. But as far as we are concerned, she will never – I repeat, We will never vote for Ursula von der Leyen, who has led a disastrous policy for the people of Europe. “The time has come to definitively put an end to his toxic mandate,” assures Le Pen.
Currently, radical right forces are active in three different political groups in the European Parliament, which considerably reduces their influence. On the one hand there are the European Conservatives and Reformistsled by the Brothers of Italy of Giorgia Melonithe Poles from Law and Justice and also Vox.
The other large ultra group in the European Parliament is Identity and Democracy, the home of the National Regrouping of Marine Le Pen the League of Matteo Salvini; and the PVV of Geert Wilders. Thirdly, Fidesz Viktor Orbán He appears in the Non-Registered group since his traumatic departure from the European People’s Party.
The great dream of the ultra forces for several terms in office is to form a single large group in the European Parliament that will be decisive in European politics. But they have always failed because of their deep internal differences on issues such as the position towards Russia or economic policy and also because of personal quarrels.
The latest episode has been Le Pen’s break with Alternative for Germany, which was expelled last week from the Identity and Democracy group. She did it after the head of this party’s list for the Europeans, Maximilian Krahstated in an interview: “I would never say that “Someone who wore an SS uniform (in Nazi Germany) was automatically a criminal.”. The Germans have become a toxic force even for Le Pen.
