The Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohamed Shia al Sudani, spoke this Sunday with the UN Secretary General, António Guterres, about the end of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, UNAMI, a request that had already been made. at the beginning of the month considering that it has already fulfilled its function.
Al Sudani has conveyed to Guterres his gratitude for UNAMI’s efforts in the country, and has recognized the support offered through different programs to help Iraq “on its journey towards democracy, reconstruction, development and recovery from terrorism and dictatorship,” according to a statement from his office published on his Facebook social network account.
After considering that UNAMI has met its objectives, the Iraqi president has addressed the issue of the calendar deadlines for the progressive reduction of its personnel through bilateral coordination.
In addition, both have discussed different fields and programs to continue cooperating, especially in matters of climate change and water management.
Al Sudani asked Guterres in early May not to extend UNAMI’s mandate beyond December 31, 2025 and to step aside from his role as the country’s political advisor.
UNAMI was established in 2003 by Security Council Resolution 1500 at the request of the Iraqi Government and acts as a special political envoy to facilitate inclusive political dialogue, national reconciliation, elections and judicial reform processes in the country. It should be remembered that the United Nations Security Council unanimously extended the mission’s mandate in May 2023 for one more year, until May 31 of this year. It has not yet met to discuss a new expansion for next year.
