At least seven babies have died and several more have been injured as a result of a fire that started this Saturday night at the New Born Baby Care children’s hospital in Vivek Vihar, in the Indian city of Delhi.
In total, emergency teams have rescued a dozen newborns, who have subsequently been transferred to another hospital. Five of the twelve rescued babies are still admitted to the hospital for medical care, as reported by ‘The Times of India’.
The Delhi Fire Brigade received an alert call at 11:32 p.m. (local time) and, immediately afterwards, Police officers and Firefighters rushed to the scene to put out the fire.
“At 11:32 p.m., the Fire Service control room received information that a fire had broken out in a hospital. In total, 16 firefighting units arrived at the scene and the fire was completely extinguished,” said the Fire officer Rajendra Atwal.
Atwal has confirmed that, in addition to the hospital, two other floors of a nearby residential building have also been affected by the flames and has assured that “more details will be shared later.”
