A pilot has died after the historic Spitfire fighter he was piloting crashed during an exhibition at a military base of the British Royal Air Force, the RAF, in Lincolnshire, in eastern England.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of an RAF pilot today in a tragic accident near Coningsby RAF base,” a spokesperson for the British Ministry of Defense reported, quoted by the newspaper ‘The Guardian’.

“The pilot’s family has already been informed and we ask that their privacy be respected at this very difficult time,” the spokesperson added.

The Police and other emergency services went to the military base around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday in response to the accident, in which only the pilot of the device was affected.

The Coningsby base hosts two rapid response combat squadrons and is the reference for the training of Typhoon fighter pilots. The Spitfires, on the other hand, were the RAF’s most important fighter aircraft during the Second World War.
