The High Representative of EU Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, has reminded Israel that the orders of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) “are binding”, in reference to the order to cease the military offensive on Rafá, in the south of the Gaza Strip, and reopen the border crossing with Egypt for the entry of humanitarian aid.
“The orders of the ICJ are binding on the parties and must be fully complied with and applied effectively,” Borrell said in a message published on the social network X.
Borrell’s text indicates that the EU “takes note of the order” of the ICJ and recalls that it demands “immediately ceasing the military offensive in the Rafá governorate” and “keeping the Rafá crossing open for humanitarian aid.”
The ICJ also calls for “guaranteeing access to any UN investigative body to investigate allegations of genocide” and “submitting a report to the Court on all measures taken to comply with this order.”
The ICJ ruled this Friday on the additional measures requested by South Africa, which has accused Israel of ignoring previous measures ordered by the United Nations court to prevent a genocide in Gaza and of further worsening the humanitarian situation in the enclave by launch a new offensive on Rafá, which has forced a new displacement of hundreds of thousands of people.
