The forces of the Houthi insurgency in Yemen have announced attacks against three ships in the Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea carried out in the last few hours and which have not yet been able to be independently verified.
The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Sarea, has specifically claimed responsibility for attacks against two Israeli ships and a third belonging to a Greek company, as part of his campaign against international cargo ships bound for Israel, as a gesture of support for the Palestinians in the Gaza war.
The first operation was directed against the Israeli ship ‘Alexandria’, against which the Houthis have launched “several ballistic missiles”, without giving more details.
A second operation would have hit the Greek ship ‘Yannis’ with a drone and several missiles when it was sailing through the Red Sea. The ship was hit by these projectiles, according to the spokesperson, without providing further information on the matter.
The ship belonged, according to the insurgents, to the Eastern Mediterranean Maritime company, which the Houthis denounce as responsible for docking their cargo ships in “ports in occupied Palestinian territory.”
The Houthi spokesman finally announced a third operation against an Israeli ship, the ‘Essex’, in the Mediterranean Sea, when it was also heading to “ports occupied” by Israel.
The maritime security firm Ambrey, specialized in monitoring ships that navigate high-risk maritime routes, has only confirmed in the last few hours a Houthi attack against an Israeli ship, flying the Liberian flag and sailing precisely through the Mediterranean.
Ambrey, however, explained that this ship “had not stopped at any Israeli port in recent weeks” and it is his understanding that the Houthi attack did not hit the cargo ship.
