Germany has warned that “there are no shortcuts” to the two-state solution and that it is an issue that will require broader negotiations and “a lot of diplomatic skill” between the parties, after the recognition of Palestine given this Wednesday by Spain , Ireland and Norway.
Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit has stressed that Germany is committed to a negotiated solution between the parties and this ultimately involves Israel accepting “the existence of a separate Palestinian State.”
In this sense, he has pointed out that this is “the only solution” for peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians and that “that will require a lot of diplomatic skill and probably also a lot of time.”
“Now there are no shortcuts,” said Hebestreit, who has warned that this conflict should not be expected to suddenly disappear after a decision that he described as “diplomatic” has been made.
On the other hand, Hebestreit has also confirmed that Germany would comply with the arrest order proposed by the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, against the Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, for war crimes and crimes against humanity. in case it is approved by the court.
“Of course, we abide by the law,” the spokesman said when asked about this matter this Wednesday, reported the German television channel Welt.
The announcements by Spain, Norway and Ireland bring to 146 the number of United Nations member states that recognize the State of Palestine. Malta and Slovenia have also stated that they could take this step soon. For its part, France believes that “the conditions” conducive to this do not exist.
