The Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Mike Johnson, warned this Monday that they could approve sanctions against the International Criminal Court in retaliation for a possible arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for war crimes.
“Congress is studying all options, including sanctions, to punish the ICC and for its leadership to assume the consequences if it goes ahead,” Johnson said, according to the US press.
Johnson has accused President Joe Biden’s Administration of helping this investigation advance to contain Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip.
American sources have indicated to the Axios portal that the vote could be this week and would have significant chances of being approved because Republicans mostly support Israel and Democrats are divided on the matter.
“I flatly reject the ICC prosecutor’s announcement,” said Democratic Congresswoman Kathy Manning. Fellow Democrat Ritchie Torres has criticized the decision, “more political than legal.”
On the other hand, other Democratic representatives such as Mark Pocan or Ilhan Omar have expressed their support for the initiative of the TPI Prosecutor’s Office. “The TPI must be allowed to work independently, without interference,” said Omar.
