Do you remember when the Google search engine was used to search for websites? That ended. Now it only shows what the AI wants you to see.
The Google search engine is no longer a pure search engine, to the annoyance of many users. So Google wants to give these users an option, with the new and well hidden web button.
Today, Searching for websites in the Google search engine is almost impossible. It has basically become an AI wall displaying the information that Google and the AI want you to see. Only if you scroll down the results list for a while will you find a missing web page.
Try any search. But don’t expect the first thing to appear to be a list of websites. At least with most of the results. And its AI Overview tool has not yet arrived in Spain.
The Web button of the Google search engine
Depending on what you ask the Google search engine, first you will see a list of featured news selected by Google, a collection of videos, locations on Google Maps, the results of the football matchday, a selection of tweets from questions and answers… Everything except a list of websites.
Many people don’t like this type of content imposed by an AI, or by Google. First, because It is a filtered and curated selection, not the results of a search. And second, because many times the only thing you want is not the latest news, the most notable videos, a FAQ, but simply something as simple and classic as a list of websites.
Google is the first to realize this, and that’s why has added a web button to the search engine. But it’s conveniently hidden:

When you perform a search, you will have to go to the top bar below the search field, tap on the button Furtherand then in Web.
Only then will Google become the classic search engine that we have used for 20 years, and offer a list of websites.

It is likely that one day you will be interested in searching for the match results, and another for the websites, but what is significant here is that the classic search engine function, the website searchis no longer the default function.
This differentiation will increase in the coming months.as Google integrates the artificial intelligence functions announced at Google I/O 2024.
Google allows you to choose between the two options, but doesn’t let you use web search by default. If you want to use it, you must press the hidden button, Web, every time.
The Google search engine dominates the market with more than 90% of use, and there are not many alternatives. With Bing, Microsoft is doing something similar. All that remains is to resort to DuckDuckGo and the like.
