Strong earthquake shakes the border between Mexico and Guatemala

A magnitude 6.4 earthquake was recorded near the coast of Chiapas, Mexico, this Sunday morning, the United States Geological Survey said.

The tremor occurred just before 6:00 a.m. near the Mexican town of Suchiate, where the river of the same name separates the two countries. Many people fled in terror to the streets.

Mexico’s national civil protection agency reported on social media that it was monitoring the situation, but that there were no initial reports of damage.

In Guatemala, where the earthquake could be felt in the capital, Guatemala City, the country’s disaster agency, CONRED, reported structural damage in the departments of Quetzaltenango and San Marcos, near the border with Mexico, including a landslide. that blocked part of a road.

There was no risk of a tsunami, according to the United States Tsunami Warning System and the Mexican Navy.
