The White House has accused China this Friday of acting “irresponsibly”, after the Chinese Communist Party announced that it was breaking relations on climate change or military action, after the escalation of tensions between the two powers due to the visit of the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, to Taiwan.
“I’m sure you’ll see China’s announcements today that it is winding down on engagement with the United States on a variety of critical issues including climate change… We think this is fundamentally irresponsible,” said John Kirby, communications coordinator. strategy of the National Security Council of the United States (USA), in a statement picked up by the media.
Thus, Kirby has stressed that “China is not only punishing the United States with (…) these actions, but is actually punishing the entire world”, while stressing that the Asian giant is “the largest emitter of the world” and that it “refuses to participate in the critical steps necessary to address the climate crisis”.
For his part, the United States special envoy for climate, John Kerry, has lamented the breakdown of relations in climate work and has described the measure as “disappointing” and “wrong”.
“The human and financial cost will be catastrophic if the international community cannot put aside its differences and come together to address the climate threat we all face,” Kerry tweeted.
In turn, Kerry has asserted that the climate commitment of both countries “must remain separate from the other problems facing” both Beijing and Washington: “That is for a simple reason: we are the two largest economies and the largest emitters, and The whole world will suffer if we don’t lead climate action together.”
However, John Kirby has communicated — after noting that “lines of communication are critical to help reduce risk” — that “not all channels of communication between military leaders are closed.”
Likewise, the spokeswoman for the White House, Karine Jean-Pierre, has encouraged Beijing in a press conference to maintain the commitment regarding dialogue on climate change and military issues. “This is what the world expects from the United States and China,” she has sentenced.
The Asian giant’s Foreign Ministry previously reported in a statement that, due to Pelosi’s “interference” “in the internal affairs” of the country when visiting Taiwan despite the alerts, telephone calls on security matters have been suspended and military with high US positions.
Thus, it has indicated that the planned work meeting between representatives of the Chinese and US Defense Ministry has been cancelled, while announcing the suspension of a meeting of the China-US Maritime Military Security Consultation Mechanism.
In addition, talks on climate change, cooperation for the repatriation of illegal migrants between the two countries, cooperation for judicial assistance and the fight against transnational crimes and drug trafficking are suspended.
