The Ukrainian president, Volodimir Zelenski, has underlined this Friday the importance of increasing grain exports to the world market, since it would serve to provide a solution to the “political chaos” that the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine are generating.
“The more of our grain is on the world market, the less the harvest of political chaos will be,” the Ukrainian president assured in his daily message to the country’s population.
Zelenski has asserted that “all the subjects” involved in the export of grain from Ukrainian ports believe that “the main thing” is that there be a constant growth in exports.
Specifically, as the Ukrainian head of state has maintained, Africa and Asia are the most interested in seeing the agreement signed by Ukraine and Russia –and mediated by Turkey and the UN– go ahead.
However, Zelensky recalled that “this year in Europe the demand for imported food is much higher than expected”, because European harvests have been smaller due to the heat.
“Most likely, the Ukrainian grain and oilseed harvest will meet forecasts: more than 65 million tons are expected,” the Ukrainian president said. “Therefore, if the partners allow further Russian provocations and ensure security, then the food crisis that threatened the world so much can be overcome,” he added.
On the other hand, he has reiterated his warning to the West about the possibility of Russia cutting off gas to Europe for the winter.
“The situation remains very dangerous due to Russia’s cynical and calculated gas blackmail. Instead of supplying gas to the territory of Europe according to its contracts, Russia simply burns it,” Zelensky said, arguing that the Kremlin wants the gas prices on the European market are so high that European countries must reverse the sanctions.
“This is a manifestation of Russia’s deliberate anti-European policy, the anti-human policy and the result of the old mistakes of the Europeans who did not want to see that Gazprom – the Russian gas company – and the gas pipelines passing through Ukraine are the same weapons for Russia as tanks and artillery,” he said.
For this reason, the Ukrainian president has urged the European states, together with Ukraine, to carry out a common defense.
“Prepare together for the new winter season (…). Let’s develop sanctions in response to Russian blackmail and terror,” he added.
