US says it is "concerned" by report alleging abuse of Palestinians in Israeli detention centers

May 14. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The United States Government has stated this Monday that it is “concerned” by the images of Palestinians arrested by Israel in the Gaza Strip and who are tied and blindfolded in an Israeli detention center, for which it has added who is investigating these types of abuse allegations.

Last week the American television network published a report on the abuse against Palestinian detainees at a military base that now functions as a detention center in the Negev desert. The article includes statements from Israeli whistleblowers giving details and providing images.

“We have been clear and consistent with any country, including Israel, that it must treat all detainees humanely, with dignity, in accordance with International Law, and must respect the Human Rights of detainees,” said the deputy spokesman for the State Department, Vedant Patel.

In this sense, he stated during a press conference that Washington has “reiterated that Israel has the obligation to thoroughly investigate credible violations of International Humanitarian Law.”

In the images that have been made public, you can see rows of men dressed in tracksuits and sitting on thin mattresses in a space surrounded by barbed wire. They all appear to be blindfolded and their heads are hanging.

The complainants are Israelis who worked at the facility and have reported that those arrested were prohibited from speaking to each other or moving. In addition, they have pointed out that there is an adjacent field hospital where injured detainees have been tied to beds, put in diapers, and fed through straws.
