The Biden Administration denied this Monday that a genocide is taking place in the Gaza Strip, where nearly 35,100 Palestinians, most of them civilians, have died due to the military offensive launched by the Israeli Army against the Palestinian enclave following the attacks. executed last October 7.

“We believe that Israel can and must do more to ensure the protection and well-being of innocent civilians. We do not believe that what is happening in Gaza is a genocide. We have gone on record as saying that we firmly reject that proposal,” said the Security Adviser. White House National, Jake Sullivan.

In this sense, he recalled that it is “a war between the State of Israel and the terrorist group Hamas, whose mission is to annihilate Israel and kill as many Jews as they can.” Sullivan stressed that Palestinian civilians are “caught” in the middle of the conflict and have suffered “unimaginable” trauma.

“We continue to believe that it would be a mistake to launch a large-scale military operation in the heart of Rafah that would put large numbers of civilians at risk without clear strategic gain,” Sullivan added at a press conference.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in January ordered Israel to “take all possible measures” to prevent a genocide in the Gaza Strip and to “urgently” ensure that the Palestinian population receives the help they need. The decision came after a complaint filed by South Africa before the court.

Two months later, he issued new provisional measures due to the humanitarian crisis situation caused by the offensive against the enclave. Last week, South Africa urgently requested additional provisional measures from the ICJ against Israel due to the risk of genocide in Gaza, as well as a review of the previous ones, given the military operation on the city of Rafah.
