April 24 () –
FRV Australia, Omers and their joint venture partner Genesis Energy, a New Zealand electricity generation company, have begun construction of the largest solar park in New Zealand, after reaching financial close in December 2023, the company reported.
This 63 megawatt (MW) solar plant is located near Christchurch in Lauriston on the Canterbury Plains and, once operational, will power the equivalent of almost 13,000 homes.
It is expected to create more than 50 jobs during the construction phase and employ up to three people full-time once operational.
As for the planned construction costs, these amount to approximately 104 million New Zealand dollars (about 58 million euros). The plant is expected to generate electricity by the end of this year.
The joint venture has also signed a 10-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Genesis Energy, which will purchase all renewable energy from the site.
The opening ceremony of the construction works was attended by Malcolm Johns, CEO of Genesis, and Carlo Frigerio, Managing Director of FRV Australia. Also in attendance were Ashburton Mayor Neil Brown, EA Networks CEO Onno Mulder and construction partner Beon CEO Kieren Lewis.
The joint venture partners are also managing three sites in the North Island with a combined capacity of up to 400 MW, as Genesis aims to achieve around 95% renewable generation by 2035.
