April 20 () –
The president of Georgian Dream, the governing party of Georgia, former Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili, assured this Saturday that the country could review the controversial law on foreign agents if it finally ends up entering the European Union.
The Parliament of Georgia this week gave its approval to the controversial foreign agents law in a first reading held despite the strong protests registered since the beginning of this week against the bill promoted by the Government.
The opposition was absent during the vote after attacking the measure, considering that it has a “Russian touch” and that it is contrary to the fundamental rights of the civilian population, according to information from the Georgian news portal Civil.
This project requires all organizations, media outlets and similar entities that receive at least 20 percent of their financing from abroad to register as “agents of foreign influence”, a measure similar to those in force in Russia.
In this context, Gharibashvili has indicated that his party has promoted this proposal under the estimation that the conditions do not yet exist for Georgia to join the European Union, although he has assured that the situation could change if at some point it ends up being part of the bloc. with whom, he defended, relations are closer than ever.
“It is said that this law is going to be an obstacle when Georgia and the EU reached their peak relationship in December, when we became a candidate country,” said the former prime minister.
“Today the EU is not prepared for enlargement, because there are many problems and it will take time,” he explained before qualifying that “if the country is ready, and tomorrow they tell us that we are going to be members of the European Union, this law “it can be cancelled, revised, changed or adopted as a replacement very easily,” he said in comments collected by the Georgian news portal Ambebi.
