Germany withdraws the frigate sent to the Red Sea to contain the Houthi attacks

BERLIN, April 20 (DPA/EP) –

This Saturday, the German Armed Forces began the withdrawal of a frigate sent to the Red Sea area to contain the attacks launched from Yemen by the Houthi rebels, within a naval mission promoted by the European Union.

The 'Hessen' began its deployment in February, with the aim of protecting cargo ships that circulate on a key route for international commercial navigation. The Armed Forces have confirmed that at dawn she considered the mission completed and left the area of ​​operations.

The frigate, 143 meters long and equipped with anti-aircraft missiles, has participated in the downing of four drones and has escorted 27 merchant ships. In total, according to official data, she has covered about 11,000 kilometers.

The German Defense Minister, Boris Pistorius, described this mission as the most dangerous naval operation in recent decades, during a visit to the frigate itself days before it headed to the Middle East.
