Kenya Armed Forces chief dies in helicopter crash

April 18 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The head of the Kenyan Armed Forces, General Francis Ogolla, died this Thursday in a helicopter accident in West Pokot county, in the west of the African country, in an event in which nine other people and two more have been injured.

This was confirmed by the President of Kenya, William Ruto, in a press appearance from State House in Nairobi, the official residence of the head of state, where he announced the identity of the rest of those who died in the accident.

According to the Kenyan president, Ogolla and the rest of the expedition had traveled to the area to visit the troops deployed in the northwest of the country and to inspect the renovation works of several schools in the area.

President Ruto has detailed that the helicopter collapsed shortly after taking off, and has classified this day as “a very sad moment” for the country and for himself, who serves as commander-in-chief of the Kenyan Armed Forces.

“Our mother earth has lost one of its bravest generals. We have also lost brave officers, servants. The death of General Ogolla is a painful loss for me, and surely for all of us,” he added.

Finally, Ruto has reported that the Kenya Defense Forces have launched an investigation to establish the causes of the accident, and have declared three days of mourning starting Friday, a period in which the national flag will fly at half-mast.
