Exit polls in Croatia give victory to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic's HDZ

April 17 () –

The polling stations in Croatia have already closed this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. (local time) in legislative elections marked by high participation compared to previous occasions and in which, according to the first exit polls, the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ ) of Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic would have achieved victory.

According to these preliminary results, and according to the Croatian press, the HDZ would have won 58 deputies, eight less than in the last 2020 elections, but establishing itself as the most voted force in Croatia. Behind the conservatives is the RĂos de Justicia coalition, led by the social democrats, with 44 deputies.

The ultranationalists of the Homeland Movement also consolidate their position as the third most voted force by obtaining 13 deputies, two more than until now. The progressive party Mozemo ( Podemos in Croatian) greatly improves its results and wins eleven seats, almost tripling its current representation. The liberal Most wins one more seat, going from eight to nine deputies.

If these results are confirmed, which coincide with the surveys published in recent weeks, governability in Croatia will depend on whether the conservatives of the HDZ or the social democratic coalition obtain the necessary support to form a government, a task that a priori does not arise. simple.

The Croatian population voted this Wednesday in anomalous elections called just over a month ago after the main parliamentary formations approved the dissolution of the chamber at the request of Prime Minister Plenkovic. That maneuver seemed to have as its objective the holding of elections before the Government could be burdened by recent controversies.

According to data from the Croatian State Electoral Commission, more than 1.6 million people had already cast their vote at 4:30 p.m. (local time), two and a half hours before the polls closed. This figure represents just over 50.5 percent of the electorate and is a record number in the European country.
