The General Confederation of Greek Workers (GSEE) has called a general strike for next Wednesday in defense of urban public transport, collective bargaining and to demand more hiring.
Other sectoral unions of doctors and the public sector have joined the call, according to the Greek radio station Atenas 9.84, which predicts that the strike will mainly affect public transport.
The three lines of the Athens Metro will be without service and city buses will operate on a limited basis between 9:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.
Railways will also be affected, according to Hellenic Train, which has announced changes and cancellations on its website and the Panhellenic Federation of Sailors has announced that ships will remain anchored 24 hours a day.
The union of doctors of the public hospitals of Athens and Piraeus, EINAP, has also joined the call and taxis will stop between 5:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.
The Federation of Pensioners' Unions has called on members and supporters at 9:00 a.m. in front of the headquarters of the Council of State to march in a demonstration to Syntagma Square (Constitution Square).
