What the green and orange dots on your iPhone screen mean

What the green dot at the top of the iPhone means

The green dot appears every time an app uses the cameras. It can also indicate when an application is using the camera and microphone simultaneously.

Common apps that will show this signal are: FaceTime, Instagram, Snapchat, or the camera app itself.

What about orange?

The orange circle appears when the microphone is used to capture audio. You'll commonly see this when recording with the Voice Memos app, making calls, or when using the “dictate text” feature to jot down something using your voice.

While all apps should request permission to access the microphone when they are first opened, the orange dot can help monitor which apps are actively using this feature.

Can these points reveal if my iPhone was hacked?

Possibly. If you see one, first check to see if there are any background apps that you forgot to close. If you don't find any apps running, it could be a sign that your iPhone has been hacked. In that case, it is advisable to turn off your phone, change the Wi-Fi password and contact your service provider.
