Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Executive Secretary of ECLAC and other high authorities will inaugurate the seventh meeting of the Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Development

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed; the Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, and other high authorities will inaugurate the seventh meeting of the Forum of Latin American and Caribbean Countries on Sustainable Developmentwhich will be held from April 15 to 18 at the regional commission's main headquarters in Santiago, Chile.

The attendance of more than 1,000 people has already been confirmed, including representatives of governments, international institutions, the United Nations System, the private sector, academia and civil society. At the meeting, which will have more than 30 parallel events, attendees will analyze the progress and challenges for compliance with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the region.

The opening ceremony of the meeting will take place on Tuesday, April 16 at 9:00 am Santiago de Chile time (UTC/GMT -04:00 hours) and will be headed by Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations; José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC, and Marcia Levaggi, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship of Argentina, the country that holds the presidency of ECLAC in the 2022-2024 biennium.

Within the framework of the meeting, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs will present the seventh report on regional progress and challenges of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in which the evolution and projection of the goals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) are examined. The document especially analyzes SDGs 1 (End Poverty), 2 (Zero Hunger), 13 (Climate Action), 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions) and 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals), as well as the projection of its fulfillment towards 2030.

The opening day includes an interactive session in which the region's authorities will be able to exchange perspectives on the adoption of possible multilateral solutions to achieve a better tomorrow, with a view to Future Summit which will be held in New York on September 22 and 23, 2024.

During the meeting, representatives of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean will discuss the urgency of reinforcing the 2030 Agenda and eradicating poverty in times of multiple crises, effectively providing sustainable, resilient and innovative solutions, and will participate in a session to address key issues related to the progress of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda in the Caribbean subregion.

The meeting considers the holding of five dialogue tables, in which the member countries of the Forum and other actors will share their experiences and challenges for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The seventh meeting of the Forum will be preceded by a meeting of the civil society participation mechanism and by the Forum of Girls, Boys, Adolescents and Youth of Latin America and the Caribbean, to be held on Monday, April 15.
