Yangon () – Two unidentified men shot a Catholic priest who was celebrating mass in the Church of Saint Patrick in Moe Nyin in the diocese of Myitkyina, in the Burmese state of Kachin. Father Paul Khwi Shane Aung, 40, was taken to the local hospital seriously injured and is receiving emergency treatment.

For more than three years, following a military coup, Myanmar has been mired in a brutal civil conflict, as Pope Francis recalled during Wednesday's general audience. Chaos reigns in several areas of the country and violent attacks are reported every day, including against civilians and members of religious minorities.

There is still little information available about what happened this morning: the shooting occurred around 6 AM (local time). Two men dressed in black and with their faces covered arrived on a motorcycle, broke into the church and fired at least five shots, local sources reported, at Father Paul Khwi Shane Aung, who has been in Moe Nyin for four years, and wounded also to a woman who was present.
