The head of the British Army, General Patrick Sanders, has urged NATO countries on Tuesday to be “prepared” to fight and defend their territory if Russia carries out an attack.

Sanders, who has warned that there is a great possibility that Moscow will emerge from the conflict in Ukraine as “an even greater threat to European security”, has stressed the need for NATO to have “deployed troops” to avoid hostile actions by Russia .

In one of his first statements after taking office, the general warned that any cut in the budget for the Army would be “perverse.”

His words come shortly before the start of the NATO summit in Madrid, where member countries are expected to advocate increasing troops to more than 300,000 troops.

Sanders has drawn parallels with World War II and has asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “brutal aggression” against Ukraine represents “the greatest threat to peace and democracy in Europe in decades.”

“This is our 1937-style moment. We are not at war but we must act quickly so as not to be dragged into one due to a containment failure,” he asserted before clarifying that Ukraine serves as an example of the possible consequences of not taking action against weather.
