The G7 issued a statement condemning the military actions that China is carrying out around Taiwan, after Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the Asian island.
“The G7 Foreign Ministers of Germany, Canada, the United States of America, France, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the High Representative of the European Union, reaffirm our common commitment to uphold the rules-based international order, peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and beyond,” the statement read.
The ministers expressed concern about China’s recent and announced threatening actions, in particular live-fire exercises and economic coercion, which “pose a risk of unnecessary escalation.”
“There is no justification for using a visit as a pretext for aggressive military activity in the Taiwan Strait. It is normal and routine for legislators from our countries to travel internationally. China’s escalatory response risks escalating tensions and destabilizing the region,” the statement said.

Likewise, the group of ministers asks China not to “unilaterally change the status quo by force in the region, and to resolve differences across the Strait by peaceful means. There is no change in the respective “one China” policies, if any, nor in the basic positions on Taiwan of the G7 members.
“We reiterate our shared and firm commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and encourage all parties to remain calm, exercise restraint, act transparently, and keep the lines of communication open to avoid misunderstandings.” » ends the statement.
China’s response
Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying responded to the G7 remarks with strong criticism.through a press conference.
“Reading this statement is like being transported back in time. The foreign ministers of these countries clearly believe that they are still living in the days of the Eight Power Allied Forces of more than 120 years ago.”
“We no longer live in a world where the imperialist powers could run over the Chinese people on Chinese soil. The China of today is not the old China humiliated and intimidated more than 100 years ago. It is time for these people to wake up from their imperial dream »criticized the Minister.
Wang Yi rejects G7 statement on Taiwan
“First of all, China has the right to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Tensions across the Taiwan Strait are primarily caused by US collusion to have the third-highest-ranking US government official fly a military aircraft to visit the Chinese region of Taiwan, ignoring strong opposition and serious protests from China.
The Minister again criticized the actions of the United States and held them responsible for the consequences to come, saying that “if the US continues on the wrong path, all the consequences that derive from it will be assumed by the US. And do not say that we haven’t told you beforehand. The United States first made a malicious provocation, and China has been forced to act in self-defense.”
“In the event of such a blatant provocation that violates China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, it is legitimate and necessary for us to take countermeasures in response, and these measures will surely be strong and resolute.”
Hua Chunying again attacked the G7 members saying that “if the G7 countries really care about peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, they should have urged the United States from the beginning not to make such a dangerous provocation, reckless and irresponsible against China.
“Before Pelosi’s visit, those countries didn’t say a word. Now, however, they have suddenly made themselves heard and leveled irresponsible accusations against China’s justified response. This says it all about their hypocrisy and ugliness.”
“In the event of such a blatant provocation that violates China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, it is legitimate and necessary for us to take countermeasures in response, and these measures will surely be strong and resolute.”
Chunying also stressed that “both today and historically, the members of the US-led G7 epitomize aggression and coercion. If anyone should be charged with aggression and coercion, the G7 countries deserve it more than anyone else.”
Finally, the Spokesperson ended by declaring that “the G7 must not forget that it is not in a position to represent the world community. Their opinions represent only a tiny fraction of the world’s nations.”
