Mexican Refugee Commission: “irregular” crossings increase

The Refugee Aid Commission revealed that after the iImposition of visas to Venezuelan citizens“irregular” crossings by land increased, most with the intention of reaching the United States

According to Andrés Alfonso Ramírez, coordinator of the Mexican Commission for Refugee Aid, in the first seven months of 2022, 7,650 Venezuelan citizens have requested refuge, so it is expected that by the end of the year there will be more than 12,000 people, twice as many as in 2021, which does not mean the total since many do not request refuge and only seek to obtain immigration permission to travel through Mexico.

“Visas for Venezuelans were set at the beginning of the year, paradoxically, instead of having cushioned or reduced the level of arrivals of Venezuelan people, they have increased notably,” said Ramírez.

He pointed out that as of January 21, when the visa for Venezuelans was imposed, the flow of people entering by plane has decreased but “irregular” income by land has increased.

“They are not arriving as they did in previous years, basically they arrived at the country’s main air ports, the vast majority are entering through Tapachula (Chiapas), which means that they are people who move by land but with a very precise objective they have intending to go to the United States,” he added.

The official also reported that it is known that this flow of people is not coming from Venezuela, but rather leaving the countries where they were exiled for several years.

Last weekend, the National Institute of Migration of the Ministry of the Interior deported 126 foreigners from Venezuela and so far this year there is a total of 343.
