The EU applauds Switzerland's initiative and hopes it will be useful for a future peace summit

BRUSSELS, April 11 () –

The European Union this Thursday applauded Switzerland's initiative for a high-level meeting on peace in Ukraine on June 15 and 16, hoping that this forum will serve to show support for the peace formula of the President of Ukraine, Volodimir. Zelensky, and on the way to a global peace summit.

“We welcome Switzerland's announcement on the date of a high-level meeting on peace in Ukraine,” said the EU Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Nabila Massrali, at a press conference from Brussels.

In this sense, he has assured that the European Union is working to have the greatest possible international support for a “comprehensive, fair and lasting” peace in Ukraine and for the deployment of the formula proposed by Zelensky, insisting that the meeting in Switzerland must put the foundations for “a future global peace summit.”

The Government of Switzerland announced a peace conference on Ukraine, an initiative that counts Zelensky among its main promoters. In the absence of who will be the attending countries and the level of these delegations, the EU has expressed its interest in attending the event although it is not known who will speak on behalf of the bloc.

Switzerland's idea is to “create a common understanding” with a view to moving towards a “complete, just and lasting” peace that respects International Law and the United Nations Charter. The meeting will take place in Burgenstock, near Lucerne and, according to diplomatic sources consulted by Europa Press, “about 120 countries at the level of heads of State and Government” will be invited.
