The Italian coast guard recovered this Wednesday the bodies of eight migrants, including that of a girl, off the coast of the island of Lampedusa, in the Central Mediterranean, after the shipwreck of a boat in the SAR zone (search and rescue zone). rescue) from Malta.

The 23 survivors, including five women, have already landed in Lampedusa and the search for an “unknown number” of missing persons is still being sought, as reported by the Italian television channel Rai.

The boat, in which some migrants had already died as a result of hypothermia, capsized about 50 kilometers from Lampedusa. The Italian authorities are investigating the incident.

According to data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), at least 385 people have already died or disappeared in the Central Mediterranean region, eleven of them minors, so far this year. Most of the migrants who cross this region, the deadliest in the Mediterranean Sea, leave from the coasts of Libya or Tunisia.
