Great commercial expectations for the Port of Chancay in Peru

The Minister of Production of Peru, Sergio González Guerrero, presented to the Supervision and Comptroller Commission of the Congress of that country a detailed report on the Chancay Megaport project and its potential economic and social impact on the fishing and productive sector of Peru.

The Chancay Megaport is projects as an important economic engine and job generator for the country. González Guerrero reported that this work is expected to generate annual income of up to US$ 4.5 billion, which represents approximately 1.8% of the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In addition, it is estimated that the project will create around 8,550 direct jobs, benefiting from closer access to the economies of the Asia-Pacific and allowing Peru to consolidate itself as a regional economic leader.

The minister highlighted the commercial opportunities that will arise with the Chancay Megaport, especially in the Asia-Pacific market, where 55% of the world's population resides and a significant part of imports and global GDP are concentrated. It is planned to open markets in countries such as China, Japan, South Korea and Indonesia, to export Peruvian products such as corn, barley, soybeans, pork, beef, as well as hydrobiological resources such as anchovy, fan shells and trout.

In terms of sectoral impact, González Guerrero highlighted that the megaport will boost the fishing industry, boosting the canning, freezing and flour industry, with the estimated creation of S/450 million and 1,200 jobs. Likewise, a positive effect is expected in the manufacturing industry, especially in the food, beverage, metalworking and furniture sectors, with a planned investment of around S/4.2 billion and the generation of 6,000 direct jobs.

The minister committed to developing a multisector plan in collaboration with the private sector to prioritize actions, regulatory adjustments and necessary investments that will allow for the full use of the opportunities that this project will bring for the country's economy.

This presentation before Congress highlights the strategic importance of the Puerto Chancay Megaport as a catalyst for economic development and a generator of employment in Peru, especially in key sectors such as fishing and manufacturing.
