It's no secret that China is the largest exporter of electronic products in the world. The Asian giant has long offered a series of advantages practically irresistible for companies. From the ability to sustain dizzying production rates to the availability of enormous merchant ports for shipments. All this, with highly competitive costs.
However, some technology companies have been charting alternative paths for some time, and Apple is one of them. We know that the Cupertino company is interested in diversifying its production scheme. Now, thanks to Bloomberg datawe know how much progress has been made towards this ambitious goal: currently, one in seven iPhones is manufactured in the plants of three companies in India.
14% of iPhones are manufactured in India
Apple does not provide details about its production scheme, but anonymous sources related to the company indicate that 14% of iPhones come from the country led by Narendra Modi. We are facing significant growth, and everything seems to indicate that Tim Cook will continue to reduce its dependence on China to produce its flagship product. Now, there is still a long way to go.
India manufactures models ranging from the iPhone 12 launched in October 2020 to the iPhone 15. The Pro models, however, still have no place on the country's production lines. And, speaking of these facilities, we must mention that the production of the aforementioned devices is distributed as follows: 67% is in the hands of Foxconn, and the rest is divided between Pegatron and Wistron.
Here's a fun fact: all three companies are Taiwan-based multinationals. In the case of Wistron there is a local stake as Tata Group took over operations in India last year, and has the ambitious goal of building the largest iPhone assembly plant in the country. In any case, India continues to gain ground on the international technological level.
