"$70 USD is not final". Games will be more expensive, warns manager

Hand in hand with the PS5 announcement, NBA 2K21 was the first $70 USD game

The beginning of the current generation brought an unpleasant surprise for the players because The most important companies agreed and applied an increase in the price of video games. The standard of $60 USD became $70 USD, but it is feared that it will not last long and that another increase will soon come. Apparently, it is inevitable, as pointed out by a Saber Interactive manager.

$70 USD per game is not enough, says Saber Interactive boss

During a Interview with IGN, Matthew Karch, CEO of Saber Interactive, discussed the current price of video games and warned that $70 per copy might not be enough. In this regard, the manager considered that the increase in production costs will make it unsustainable to maintain the current price standardespecially given how risky it is to invest large amounts in the development of a video game since there is no guarantee that good results will accompany the launch.

In that sense, the head of Saber Interactive thinks that a higher price of $70 USD could give certainty to publishers and studios as there would be greater chances of recovering the investment and making a profit: “I think that as games become more expensive to make, the price of $70 USD will follow the path of the dodo [extinto]. I just don't think it's sustainable. Do you remember the hype of Cyberpunk, in the end it worked well, but when expectations are so high and so much money is invested in a title, it is very risky for the company that is making it, so you ask, what if it fails? Remember what happened with Ubisoft a couple of years ago, when all of their titles tanked commercially, and then suddenly they were in a completely different position? “It's hard to recover from that.”

Finally, Matthew Karch mentioned that in the event that there is no price increase in video games, the option will be to reduce production costs with the impact that this could have on the final result lowering the expectations of investors and players.
