The PP will support the Government in its decision to recognize the State of Palestine. The leader of the opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has publicly expressed his support for the president, Pedro Sánchez, in the two-state solution as a way to begin to resolve the conflict in the Middle East, but has made it a condition for him to first meet the support of a “critical mass of countries with weight” and that the decision is the result of a negotiation process.
Feijóo spoke like this just days after the former president of the Government José María Aznar described this solution as “absurd”. It would be “absurd” to recognize the State of Palestine, said the former leader of the PP about a position that his party took in the last electoral program and that he ratified in 2014 with his support for a declaration to this effect in the Congress of the Deputies.
Then, Congress approved a non-law proposal, which came forward after a negotiation between PP and PSOE, which supported urging the Government to recognize the State of Palestine, but in which they specified that this recognition should be the consequence of a process of negotiation that guarantees peace, respect for citizen rights and regional stability.
Feijóo referred to that commitment this Wednesday. “We support the two-state solution and I add: the how and when is key to contributing to a permanent solution,” said the opposition leader in his reply to Sánchez's appearance in Congress this Wednesday, to which he attended to report on the decisions of the last European Councils and to talk about Spain's relationship with Morocco.
Feijóo has talked about the two-state solution but has put a series of conditions on it. The first is that it is the result of a “negotiation process.” “It has to have a sufficient critical mass of countries with weight,” he said. “Until you resolve that, I ask you to be responsible instead of the broad brush,” he added in his response.
During his initial intervention, Sánchez has opted, as he has been doing in recent months, to recognize the State of Palestine. To this end, he has initiated a round of contacts with different European leaders, with the presidents of Slovenia, Malta and Ireland, whom he will visit in the coming weeks. “Spain is prepared to recognize the Palestinian State,” Sánchez defended from the rostrum.
