On Sunday, Rwanda paid solemn tribute to the victims of the genocide, 30 years after a cruel campaign orchestrated by Hutu extremists tore apart the country, as neighbors turned against each other in one of the bloodiest massacres of the 20th century. The massacre, which lasted 100 days before the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rebel militia took Kigali in July 1994, claimed the lives of some 800,000 people, mostly Tutsis but also moderate Hutus.

In this edition of Africa 7 Days we focus on Rwanda, which commemorates three decades since the tragic Tutsi genocide. This event left an indelible mark on the history of the country and the African continent. During the commemoration ceremony, President Paul Kagame made a forceful denunciation: the international community had failed Rwanda during that dark period. Accompanied by world leaders, Kagame recalled the tragedy and called for reflection on the lessons learned.

Today, Rwanda is known for its economic growth, being billed as the “African economic miracle.” This economic rise has been accompanied by a firm focus on national security. However, Kagame's government has faced questions from human rights groups.

What is post-genocide Rwanda like? What lessons have been learned in these thirty years? And, above all, what are the challenges that the country still faces in terms of reconstruction, justice and reconciliation? These are questions that we address in this episode of Africa 7 Days.
