The measure, which will be published in the Federal Register, was in effect until April 12 of this year, when it turned 14 years old. With this decision, the national emergency will be in force until April 2025.
The American president, Joe Biden, has communicated his decision to the United States Congress through a statement in which he mentions that the situation regarding Somalia has been marked by “the deterioration of the security situation and the persistence of violence.” .
Likewise, he has indicated that “acts of piracy and armed robbery continue to occur on the coasts of Somalia”, which have been the subject of UN Security Council resolutions; and that violations of the arms embargo imposed by the aforementioned United Nations agency have been recorded.
The Armed Forces of Somalia have been immersed for months in a “total war” campaign against the jihadist organization Al Shabaab, which has retreated to its strongholds in the south-central and southern parts of the country, although the number of attacks against the Somali authorities has also increased both in the capital, Mogadishu, as in other areas.
The increase in offensives against the terrorist group has the support of local clans and militias and is part of a series of decisions taken by the president, Hasan Sheikh Mohamud, who promised upon taking office to put the fight against terrorism at the center of his efforts. to stabilize the African country.
