The US announces a delegation for the inauguration of Petro in Colombia

The United States delegation to the inauguration of the elected president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, will be headed by Samantha Power, the administrator of the US Agency for International Development (USAID), President Joe Biden reported Wednesday.

Petro will assume the presidency of Colombia next Sunday, August 7, in Bogotá.

A White House statement added that the other members of the delegation will be Gregory Meeks, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Francisco L. Palmieri, chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Bogotá.

The group is completed by Desirée Cormier Smith, special representative for Racial Equality and Justice of the Department of State, and Juan González, special assistant to President Biden and director for Western Hemisphere Affairs of the National Security Council.

Petro won the presidency of Colombia in a second round of elections in July and is the first representative of the left to reach the top magistracy of the South American country.
