Meta seems to have gotten in, again, in another mess related to the privacy of users, but in this case it is not a simple follow-up case, that always seems to pay off with small fines -compared to the size of the company-, but in this case it has to do with a Meta tracking tool used by American hospitals.
As has been discovered in TheVerge, This lawsuit explains that 33 of the top 100 hospitals in the United States have used the Facebook Pixel on their web portals, 7 of them within password-protected portals. The Facebook Pixel is a Meta tracking tool that, in this case, has been used to send medical information to Facebook.
Among the data captured are the diseases of each specific patient, appointments with doctors, and types of medication used by patients, data that does not belong anywhere near Facebook.
Another related lawsuit explains that At least 664 health service providers have used the Facebook Pixel to send medical data to Facebook, so in both cases it seems to be a clear violation of HIPAA, a law that focuses on the treatment of medical data of patients.
