At least ten people have died and 12 are unaccounted for due to flooding in the Bugisu and Sebei regions of eastern Uganda.
Among the dead is an officer of the Ugandan Armed Forces, Sam Chemulindwa, 26, who was swept away by the floods that have been hitting the region since Saturday night, according to the newspaper ‘Monitor’.
The rains, which began around 8:00 p.m. on July 30, have devastated the Namabasa, Busajabwankuba, and Busamaga areas, among others. In the course of the water, bridges, roads and agricultural plantations have been swept away, as well as a secondary school in Bugisu, one of the most affected towns.
Likewise, the torrential rains –which have caused several rivers to overflow– have demolished several houses and have blocked some roads, making the tasks of the emergency services more difficult.
The Ugandan Prime Minister, Nabbanja Robinah, has visited the affected region and has conveyed her support to the affected people: “The president is aware of this disaster. We are here to assess the situation and provide support when necessary and to evacuate the survivors. “He said according to ‘The Observer’.
