July 31 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews have fired Rabbi Yitzchok Tuvia Weiss, leader of the Eda Haredit group and known for his radical anti-Zionism, at a funeral in Jerusalem this Sunday. Weiss supporters have clashed with police in at least two reported minor incidents.
The rabbi passed away on Saturday at the age of 95. The funeral procession has left the Givat Moshe neighborhood of Jerusalem and has finished its march in the Mount of Olives cemetery, where he has been buried, according to the newspaper ‘The Times of Israel’.
In anticipation of this funeral, the Israeli Police have blocked several important streets in Jerusalem. Normality has not recovered until 3:00 p.m. in the afternoon.
According to the Israeli news portal Walla, two agents showed up at the rabbi’s house to coordinate the funeral and were greeted with insults and shouts of “Nazis!” and “assassins!” At another point, several marchers clashed with officers who were controlling traffic.
Weiss was a staunch defender of the ‘sabbat’ as a strict holiday in which one cannot work and a supporter of students in yeshivas or religious schools not having to do compulsory military service.
He was born in Slovakia and came to the UK just before the start of World War II. He led a Jewish community in Antwerp before becoming head of the Eda Haredit group in 2004.
This organization is radically opposed to the creation of a State based on race or Jewish religion and rejects any type of contribution to the public treasury. In addition, its members have participated in violent demonstrations against the Israeli Army and the State, confronting the Police and blocking roads to protest compulsory military service.
