Almost 400 migrants rescued by the 'Ocean Viking' receive a safe harbor in Salerno (Italy)

The rescue ship ‘Ocean Viking’, from the NGO SOS Meditérranée, has received permission to dock in the Neapolitan port of Salerno to disembark the 380 migrants rescued in the operations of recent days, the organization announced this Sunday.

However, permission is still pending for the ‘Geo Barents’, a ship operated by Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which carries 660 refugees, of which 150 are minors.

The ship ‘Sea Watch 3’, from the German organization ‘Sea Watch’, which disembarked its 440 refugees in the Italian port of Taranto, also received permission yesterday.


Since January, 875 migrants have perished in Mediterranean waters while trying to reach Europe, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Since 2014, the year of the first census, there is evidence of 20,000 dead or missing.
