Guatemala is experiencing its fifth wave of COVID-19 infections

A new increase in COVID-19 cases has put Guatemalan health authorities on alert, who revealed on Monday that the country is experiencing a fifth wave of infections from the new coronavirus.

The Minister of Health, Francisco Coma, said that the country has registered up to 40% of positive tests for covid in recent days. “We consider that there are a few days left to reach the peak of the fifth wave,” he added.

The Health portfolio revealed that to date they have 26,567 confirmed active cases of COVID-19, which are added to the 897,462 accumulated cases.

What worries the ministry, according to the authorities, is that up to 3,000 cases of positive people have been registered in a single day in the centers where the tests are taken.

More vaccines

The head of Health, who was quoted by the Guatemalan News Agencyannounced that they continue to strengthen vaccination campaigns in the country.

On Monday they received a new batch of 349,830 doses of Pfizer-brand vaccines, which were donated by Spain.

According to report from Johns Hopkins University, in Guatemala has only vaccinated 35.16% of its population.
