Rodolfo Hernández has been a senator of the Republic for just over a week, but there is already talk of his resignation from this corporation. And it is that one of the men closest to the former presidential candidate, also congressman ‘Jota Pe’ Hernández, suggested it.
Rodolfo came to Congress thanks to the fact that he obtained second place in the presidential elections, with more than 10 million votes, but these were not enough to overcome Gustavo Petro, who was finally elected and will take office on August 7.
Under the Statute of Opposition, the second-highest voter in the presidential election is entitled to a seat in the Senate and their vice-presidential ticket in the House of Representatives.
According to ‘Jota Pe’, who was one of the most voted congressmen, the former mayor of Bucaramanga would resign from the Senate to aspire to the Governorship of Santander, a position that will be elected in October 2023. This was stated in the local newspaper Vanguardia.
“I don’t want him to leave the Senate, but I recognize that as Governor he would do Santander a lot of good,” the senator from the Alianza Verde told the Santander media outlet.
And if Hernández really wants to aspire to the governorship, he has to give up his seat in the coming months, because if he does not do so, he would enter a disability and, if he wins the electoral contest, his election will be null.
But this is not the first time that the possibility of the former presidential candidate reaching the governorship of Santander, where he has his political stronghold, has been discussed. In fact, there was talk at one point that he would not accept his seat to focus on the campaign, but he was finally sworn in on July 20.
That day he starred in a curious fact, because he was surprised by how the Congress of the Republic works and said that a corraleja is more orderly.
“A corraleja has more order than the opening session of the Senate, poor country,” he said on his Twitter account.
During his days as a parliamentarian, Hernández is advancing, in the company of ‘Jota Pe’, Humberto de la Calle and Ariel Ávila, a debate of political control for the alleged embezzlement of peace.
Also, voted in favor of the Escazú agreement, according to him, because he is fighting for the Santurbán páramo.
But for now it is not official and there is no communication to the presidency of the Senate and Hernández will continue as congressmen, at least until the deadline is met so as not to be disqualified and to be able to aspire without any legal mess.
