The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, has urged farmers on Thursday to lift the blockades of several roads in the framework of protests against the policy on the use of fertilizers and gas emissions.
Farmers, who have thrown manure and hay on the country’s main highways, have been branded “unacceptable” by the president, who has called for the blockades to end.
In this sense, he has indicated that there are many ways to protest “within the framework of the law”, according to information from the newspaper ‘NRC Handelsblad’. Police have indicated that the blockades mainly affect the A7 highway, which connects the city of Zaandam with the German border to the north. The A1 has also been closed at Voorst due to the high level of waste.
“We are working hard to clean the road, but the workers are expected to be busy for a long period of time,” said the police, who have asked for caution on the roads.
The protests started after the Dutch government decided to introduce a series of environmental policies to limit nitrogen emissions. According to farmers, this measure will ruin many homes in rural areas because livestock and fertilizers are precisely the main sources of this type of emissions.
