The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Boris Johnson, presented the Winston Churchill award to the President of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, on Tuesday, in recognition of his “incredible courage, resistance and dignity” in the face of “the barbaric invasion” of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
This has been confirmed on its Facebook profile by the British Embassy in kyiv, which has shared a photograph of Prime Minister Johnson emulating the delivery of the award to Zelensky, present at the event by videoconference.
Later, as detailed by the Ukrainian Presidency, the ‘premier’ has valued Zelenski’s leadership by staying on Ukrainian territory despite knowing that, especially in the early stages of the war, he would be “objective” of Russia.
For its part, the Winston Churchill International Society, responsible for the award that honors the former British prime minister during World War II, lamented that “Europe is threatened by tyranny.”
“Like Winston Churchill, President Zelensky shows that tyranny must not triumph, that people must have the right to choose their own path and life,” said International Society leader Lawrence Heller.
Finally, the Ukrainian head of state has conveyed his gratitude to all his fellow citizens for “defending freedom from the attack of tyranny”, while once again praising Johnson’s support for Ukraine.
“The world’s democracies are capable of stopping any tyranny (…) Patience is the path to victory. Nobody knows today how much time and effort it will take to achieve it. However, victory is worth it,” said Zelensky, who Finally, he pointed out that both he and Johnson will be remembered in the future as the figure of Churchill himself is now valued.
The award has been delivered to the Ukrainian ambassador in London, Vadim Pristiak, who will be in charge of transporting it to Ukrainian territory to finally end up in the hands of Zelenski.
